Reducing visual clutter frees my brain for creativity

Weaving is such a visual process. Over the years I have found that staying organized and having the information about my weaving project easy to read and neatly presented has been an important aspect of my weaving flow.

The Weaver’s Perfect Memory and accessories are my mindful companions in my studio.

We were surprised and pleased by the number of questions we received after our recent e-mail sponsorship of the Handwoven weekly newsletter. One of the questions you posed was how the paper strips that document the weaving draft are produced. The “how to use” page provides details about this as well as this short narrated power-point.

Four Methods to Reproduce Draft Paper for the Weaver’s Perfect Memory Cylinder

Core Concepts and Key Insights

  • The Weaver’s Perfect Memory is a cylindrical tool designed to hold draft paper that guides weavers through threading heddles and weaving patterns.

  • The draft paper width should be approximately 3 inches to fit the cylinder properly.

  • Drafts can be single or multiple sheets taped together to form a continuous pattern wrapped around the cylinder and flowing through the back of the tool.

  • The tool is used in two orientations depending on the task:

    • Threading heddles: tool on its side, pointer vertical

    • Weaving: tool on its bottom, pointer horizontal

Quick Summary

Method 1 - Hand-drawn draft using graph paper

Method 2 - Create draft using word processing software (e.g., Microsoft Word)
